What is Tongits?

Tongits is a popular Filipino card game played with a standard 52-card deck by three players. The game combines elements of rummy and poker, where players aim to form melds consisting of sets (three or four of a kind) and runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit). The objective is to get rid of all cards by forming melds and laying them down on the table.

The name "Tongits" is derived from the Filipino word "tongits" which means to finish or complete. When a player successfully melds all their cards, they call "Tongits!" and win the round instantly. This exciting card game has been a mainstay in Filipino social gatherings and has now found a vibrant online home at Jolibet.

How to Play Tongits

Step 1 - Dealing: Each player receives 13 cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile, with the top card turned face-up as the discard pile starter.

Step 2 - Gameplay: On your turn, draw one card from either the draw pile or the discard pile. After drawing, you may lay down melds if you have valid sets or runs. Then discard one card to the discard pile.

Step 3 - Melding: A set is three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three 7s). A run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 5-6-7 of hearts). You can only lay down melds on your own turn.

Step 4 - Winning: You win by calling "Tongits!" when all your cards form valid melds, or by having the lowest total card value when another player knocks. Number cards are worth their face value, face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each, and Aces are worth 1 point.

Step 5 - Scoring: The winner earns points based on the remaining cards in opponents' hands. Special bonuses apply for Tongits calls, draws, and consecutive wins.

Tongits Tips & Strategies

Master these Tongits strategies to improve your win rate at Jolibet:

  • Watch the Discard Pile: Pay attention to what cards opponents are picking and discarding to deduce their melds
  • Hold High Cards: Face cards carry 10 points each, so avoid holding them if an opponent might knock
  • Knock Early: If your deadwood count is low (under 10), consider knocking before opponents form all their melds
  • Count Cards: Keep mental track of which cards have been played to calculate remaining deck composition
  • Bluff Discards: Discard cards that might make opponents think you are going for a different meld than you actually are
  • Manage Risk: In close games, prioritize forming runs over sets as runs are harder to block

Tongits Rules & Variations

Tongits has several popular rule variations across the Philippines. At Jolibet, we offer the most common standard rules:

  • Standard Tongits: 3 players, 13 cards each, standard melding rules. Calling "Tongits" with all cards melded wins instantly
  • Draw Variation: More players can join with adjusted card counts. Some variations allow draws where no player wins
  • Knock Rule: A player with low deadwood points can knock to end the round. Other players get one final turn to lay down melds
  • Bonus Scoring: Special bonuses for "Tongits" calls, pure melds (all sets), and consecutive round wins
